Cultural Mosaic Program

THE CITADEL DANCERS BRING WORLD DANCE AND CULTURES TO LOCAL SCHOOLS

animals1Last Spring Elizabeth Andrews, who teaches Modern Dance for us, envisioned a new project that would stretch not only the talent of our performing companies, but also the learning of local elementary school children.

Her idea was to have the Citadel and Junior Citadel Dancers learn dances from many different countries, set to authentic music and choreographed by our own faculty, which is very culturally diverse itself. The dancers would then tour several different schools and present an hour long program about each country, highlighting its celebrations and dance.

This project, now called the Cultural Mosaic, was so well received by principals all around Berrien County that it will be shown in over a dozen schools during the months of September and February. The members of our performing companies and their parents have been very supportive of this project and are very excited about the upcoming tours.

If you were able to see any of the outdoor performances this year you have an idea of the different countries that will be represented and have already seen some of the beautiful costumes made for the dancers. The countries represented are: India, Japan, Senegal, Ireland, France, Mexico and the United States.
