Dixie DetgenDixie Detgen is a graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching of Music. She has done postgraduate work at WMU and VanderCook College of Music. She taught 29 years in the Buchanan Community Schools. During her tenure as band director, her ensembles consistently earned Division 1 ratings at MSBOA district and state festivals. Her emphasis on Solo and Ensemble Festival resulted in high levels of student participation.

Mrs. Detgen has been an MSBOA adjudicator for over 40 years, judging both Solo and Ensemble and Band and Orchestra Festivals. She has given clinics at all the major universities in Michigan, the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, The Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids and is a regular presenter at the American Band College of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. She has been a church organist and choir director for over 45 years, and was a member and associate conductor of the Southshore Concert Band. She has played with the Michiana Symphony, Southold Wind Ensemble and the Andrews University Band and Orchestra. She retired from the St. Joseph Municipal Band with 50 years of service.

In 1996, Mrs. Detgen was voted “Band Teacher of the Year” by the membership of MSBOA. The American School Band Director’s Association selected the instrumental music department of the Buchanan Community Schools as “Band Program of Excellence”. The “Edwin Franko Goldman” award for meritorious service to music education was presented to her at the 2008 ASBDA convention. She holds memberships in MENC, where she is a nationally registered teacher, ASBDA, serving on the Foundation Board, NBA, MSBOA, AF of M, SAI and was nominated to “Who’s Who Amoung America’s Teachers” in 1992. Mrs. Detgen owns her own business, “Detgen Seminars and Clinics”, giving clinics for band directors and music students and has a studio of 20 oboe students.

Mrs. Detgen enjoys seeing young oboists grow musically through participation in Solo and Ensemble Festivals and recitals. Students are encouraged to audition for various honor bands and attend summer music camp if possible.
