Dr. Joanna Steinhauser, violinist, currently works as the recruiting liaison in the Department of Music at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, also her alma mater. In addition, she teaches private violin lessons at Crescendo Music Academy in Kalamazoo, and The Citadel Music and Dance Center in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She most recently held a one-quarter appointment as Visiting Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at Kalamazoo College. In December 2009 she received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University, where she studied violin performance with Kevork Mardirossian and Espen Lillenslatten. Originally from Benton Harbor, Michigan, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Kalamazoo College as a violin student of Dr. Barry Ross, graduating cum laude with Honors in music, and a Master of Music at Michigan State University where she studied with Dmitri Berlinsky.
She is presently a first violin section member of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, in which she has held one-year title positions such as Associate Concertmaster and Associate Principal Second Violin. She has frequently played in the violin section of many other regional orchestras including the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Sinfonietta (a new music ensemble), Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and Miami Symphony Orchestra. In 2009 she was a soloist with the Louisiana Sinfonietta and performed her final Doctoral lecture recital about Prokofiev’s Solo Sonata, Op. 115.
Ms. Steinhauser is committed to bringing music to the greater community by teaching students of many ages in her private studio. In July 2009 she founded the Baton Rouge Summer Strings Jam, a summer musical festival for young string players in Baton Rouge. In 2008-09, she was a founding instructor of the Alvin Batiste Conservatory in collaboration with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and Children’s Charter School, in efforts to expose more children in Baton Rouge to classical music. Since relocating back to Michigan, she has performed several recitals both at Kalamazoo College and in the greater Kalamazoo community, and looks forward to launching her musical and academic endeavors in the Midwest.
