Acoustic Bass, Bass Guitar

Jonathan Reed is a professional bassist, teacher, and clinician in the Lansing area. He holds a B.M. in Music Performance from Michigan State University in 2009 as well as a M.M. in Music Performance from Rice University in 2012. His primary teachers include Jack Budrow, Timothy Pitts, and Paul Ellison. Jonathan also had the privilege of working with other great masters of the instrument including Francois Rabbath, Edgar Meyer, Ali Yazdanfar, Nico Abbondolo, and Bruce Bransby to name a few. In addition to his studies throughout the year, he has attended many summer music festivals that include Domaine Forget, Aspen Music Festival, Interlochen, Brevard Music Center, and Music Academy of the West.

Jonathan plays bass in a variety of regional orchestras in Michigan and was the Assistant Principal Bass with Southwest Michigan Symphony as well as Section Bass member with the Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, and Lansing Symphony Orchestras from 2006-2009. He has also played and subbed with the Jackson, Midland, Grand Rapids, and Rochester Symphony Orchestras. During his four years in Houston Jonathan taught privately and ran clinics at both the Cypress Fairbanks and Clear Creek Independent School Districts. More recently he was the Assistant Principal Bass with the Symphony of Southeast Texas from 2012-2013.

He is currently Assistant Principal Bass with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and maintains a private studio at both the Citadel Music and Dance Center and in the Okemos Public School District. Jonathan’s hobbies include learning jazz/funk on upright and electric bass, cooking, and tennis. Jonathan is married to Elizabeth Reed, a middle school choir and general music director at Kinawa Middle School in Okemos, MI.

Jonathan plays on a bass made by contemporary American maker Albert Jackstadt in 2008 (#97) with a Robertson’s C Extension. He uses Thomastik Belcantos for his G, D, and A strings and an extra long Spirocore medium gauge for his E string. Jonathan uses a Brazilian bow made my Heleomar Cirilo for orchestral playing and a bow made by Roy Quade in Calgary for solo playing.
